The Official Major League Baseball World Series Film Collection is an impressive 20-disc set that assembles all the official World Series highlight films between 1943 and 2008's Philadelphia Phillies victory. The films themselves--the earliest are black and white and under a half-hour, the most recent well over an hour-- are fascinating time capsules of the game, recording many of its greatest players, greatest teams, and greatest moments: the Yankees-Dodgers-Giants intracity rivalry, the St. Louis Cardinals' "Gas House Gang," Willie Mays' catch and Don Larsen's perfect game, Bill Mazeroski's and Kirk Gibson's dramatic home runs, the Mets' miracles, the Big Red Machine, and the Red Sox's curse-breaker. They're packaged in an eye-catching book-sized tome that collects facts and descriptions of the Fall Classic starting in 1903, a list of all winners, a foreword by Bob Costas, and two empty slots to house future films. It's a great gift for any serious baseball fan. --David Horiuchi

Bought this as a gift for a fan of baseball and he loved it so much that he purchased 3 more copies for family members he knew would enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Great gift for baseball fan   May 7, 2010

I purchased the Official World Series collection for my 90 year old father who has been a St. Louis Candinal fan for most of his life. It has a nice presentation with photos on the DVD protectors. He enjoys looking at many of the older black and white movies and remembering players of the past. I would highly recommend this as a gift for any serious baseball fan.

This is really a nice set, if you can get it on sale or a gold box special for under $100, like I did.

I just received this recently, so I decided to review it based on watching 3 various years.

The year I was born.
A year I was familiar with as a teen, 1980 Phillies
And lastly, one of the modern era Yankees championships.

The quality of the films is excellent.

The older ones include a few intro advertisements from the production company which are kind of cool.

The really old ones, look like those "movie reels" from the old time B&W movie days.

As you move through the years, the production obviously gets more slick and polished.

Since each season is it's own separate story, it makes it easy to simply watch just one episode from any particular year, and really enjoy it.

Overall the video and audio are very good.

I'm knocking off one star for two reason.

#1: The book format.
I don't like these "thick page" albums where the DVD slides into the page.
To me, that's a waste of space, and I'd rather have more pages, filled with more photos, than something that is going to take up this much shelf space.
Also (this is a small thing..but) the font selection on the printing was too small in the index. They used an almost cursive font that makes it difficult to identify what year you are looking at, relating to that years disc.

#2: Lack of extras on the DVD's.
I'd like to see SOMETHING extra, geesh.

All in all, this would make a wonderful gift, or just to enjoy yourself, if you hit it at the right price point.

I really don't know how to describe this. Wonderful? Miraculous? The best thing since sliced bread, nay, the best thing including sliced bread. As an amateur St. Louis Browns fan, I have long aspired to see the classic 1944 World Series, but how???? Well baseball has an idea. Let's put every World Series since 1943 on DVD (minus the horrific 2009 World Series, which we shall not discuss). Also let's put it in a sweet tabletop book with pictures of classic World Series moments. If you don't like this, I probably won't like you. I give it my fullest endorsement, or my name isn't James.
